In brief
A devastating plane crash in Upstate New York has claimed the lives of six individuals, including esteemed former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) football player Karenna Groff, her parents, and her brother. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the tragic incident, which has left the community mourning the significant loss of a promising family.
The aircraft went down in an open field while the Groff family was en route to a holiday celebration, according to detailed statements from the family. The NTSB indicated that a video captured the moments preceding the crash, showing the plane in stable condition prior to its rapid descent. The deceased were identified as Karenna, her parents Dr. Michael Groff and Dr. Joy Saini, her brother Jared and his partner Alexia Couyutas Duarte, as well as Karenna's partner James Santoro. Described by many as a remarkable family, their contributions to society were noted, with James Santoro's father expressing that "the world lost a lot of very good people who were going to do a lot of good." Karenna, recognized as the NCAA's Woman of the Year in 2022, had recently graduated from MIT and was pursuing her medical studies at New York University (NYU), where her warmth and accomplishments were celebrated by the community. Reports suggest that Dr. Groff, an experienced pilot, was flying the plane when it crashed in Craryville, New York. The NTSB confirms that air traffic control made multiple attempts to reach the pilot, but without success. While reduced visibility due to weather conditions could be a factor, the crash's cause remains under investigation, with further findings expected within the next one to two years. This unfortunate event follows another recent helicopter crash in New York that resulted in the deaths of six individuals, reiterating concerns around aviation safety in the area.
