The revelation of Modi's Vanuatu citizenship surfaced shortly after India's officials confirmed his application to relinquish his Indian passport in London, sparking conversations around his motives and legal status. Napat clarified that Vanuatu citizenship is intended for individuals seeking legitimate residence, rather than for evading legal accountability.
In defense of the cancellation, Napat remarked, "Applicants must seek citizenship for legitimate reasons... None of those legitimate reasons include attempting to avoid extradition," as he emphasized the need for transparency in citizenship applications. Notably, background checks during Modi's application had revealed no prior criminal records; however, subsequent revelations indicated that Interpol had denied India’s requests for alerts against him, which would have autonomously impeded his citizenship acquisition.
Lalit Modi gained prominence as the architect of the IPL, a lucrative cricket franchise that has grown into a billion-dollar empire.
