Russia pounded Ukraine with missile and drone attacks overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, focusing on the major western city of Lviv. Ukraine's neighbour Poland scrambled fighter jets to ensure the safety of Polish airspace, according to confirmation from the Polish military, with allied NATO aircraft also deployed.

Lviv's regional head Maksym Kozytskyi reported that two people were killed in strikes in the region, and two more were injured. Additionally, Russia targeted Ukraine's power plants, with a significant strike on Zaporizhzhia, leaving one person dead and over 73,000 residents without electricity.

The Russian assaults came just days after a US official indicated that the US would support Ukraine in launching deep strikes within Russian territory. Poland's operational command stated, Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness.

All of Ukraine was placed under air raid alerts early on Sunday, receiving warnings about potential missile attacks. The Russian strikes also targeted other western cities, leading to extensive infrastructure damage and raising concerns about public safety.

In Lviv, disruption to power supply was reported, with the mayor advising caution against going out due to ongoing threats. In nearby Zaporizhzhia, the aftermath of the strikes left numerous civilian casualties and widespread outages, with emergency services responding to multiple incidents.

As Ukraine continues to face aggression from Russia, the need for heightened military readiness and international support remains critical. The ongoing conflict has escalated concerns in neighboring countries, leading to heightened alertness across borders.
