Antonio Brown, former NFL star wide receiver, has been arrested on an attempted murder charge following a shooting incident that took place after a celebrity boxing event in Miami, police confirmed on Thursday.
At 37 years old, Brown was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and subsequently flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he is currently held pending extradition back to Miami.
The circumstances surrounding his transfer to New Jersey remain unclear, as it is unknown how long Brown had been in Dubai prior to his arrest, despite his social media activity from the location in recent months.
According to the arrest warrant associated with the incident, Brown allegedly took a handgun from a member of the security team after the boxing match and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, the man with whom he had previously engaged in a fistfight. It is reported that one of the bullets grazed Nantambu's neck.
The legal implications of the attempted murder charge are severe, carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison along with a potential fine of $10,000 if convicted.
It remains unclear whether Brown has secured legal representation or when he is expected to be returned to Miami.
Brown’s NFL career spanned 12 years, predominantly with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he earned his status as an All-Pro receiver and totaled 928 receptions for over 12,000 yards and 83 touchdowns.
Throughout his career, Brown has faced various legal challenges, including accusations of battery and domestic violence, and his erratic behavior led to a highly publicized exit from the NFL in 2021. During a game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he famously left the field mid-game, sealing the end of his professional career.
