STAFFORD, VA — A bus on southbound Interstate 95 struck six cars in a work‑zone slowdown, resulting in five fatalities and 34 injuries, said Virginia State Police Friday.
The collision occurred around 2:35 a.m. on a stretch of interstate that was running a work zone. All five deceased were passengers or occupants of the vehicles the bus hit, while three of the injured remain in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was slowing southbound for an upcoming work zone, said the police. A bus failed to slow for traffic and struck six vehicles.
The event has prompted a review of traffic control measures in work‑zone areas and a push for stricter driver compliance with speed limits during construction work.
