Authorities in Portugal and Germany have commenced a renewed search for Madeleine McCann, the young girl who vanished from her family's apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007. Now, almost 20 years later, this high-profile case is drawing fresh attention as investigators dig into various sites linked to the investigation.
The search began Monday following warrants approved by German prosecutors for 21 plots of land in proximity to where Madeleine was last seen and where the primary suspect, German national Christian Brückner, was staying at the time. On Tuesday, officers were observed actively digging at an abandoned structure, clearing debris to facilitate their investigation.
The operation, covering the municipality of Lagos, involves significant collaboration between Portuguese and German police. A fire truck and several police vehicles were seen at the site, approximately 3.5 miles from the Ocean Club resort where the McCann family was vacationing. Authorities have strictly closed roads near the search area, which primarily consists of scrubland and disused buildings along the coastline. They have conducted comprehensive inspections of wells, with firefighters draining one for further examination.
Authorities anticipate the participation of roughly 30 German officers throughout this operation. Former head of missing children investigations at the National Crime Agency, Charlie Hedges, noted this expansive search approach suggests a broader inquiry rather than targeting a specific lead. He expressed that the investigators must justify the considerable resources deployed for the search.
Initially led by Portuguese authorities with British support, the investigation has been complicated since German police identified Brückner as their prime suspect in 2020. He is currently serving time for a separate crime but has denied any involvement in Madeleine's case. Authorities are under pressure to gather substantial evidence before Brückner's possible release in 2026.
Furthermore, Portuguese officials have designated Brückner as a formal suspect, offering promised evidence from the current search to German law enforcement. The Metropolitan Police remain engaged, continuing their separate investigations under Operation Grange, which has accrued substantial costs since its inception in 2011. However, no clear indication of new information prompting this search has been provided.
As investigators revisit locations associated with past inquiries, they employ advanced forensic techniques to explore areas that were previously overlooked. Jim Gamble, who oversaw a review of the case, lamented the initial investigation's shortcomings, stating that many opportunities to gather crucial evidence were missed.
