Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that Europe won't be blackmailed by President Donald Trump's threats of tariffs over Greenland. Trump proposed a 10% levy on goods from nations opposing his intention to acquire the autonomous Danish territory. In a joint statement issued by Frederiksen and other European leaders, they warned that such tariffs could undermine transatlantic relations and trigger a dangerous downward spiral.
Trump, emphasizing the strategic importance of Greenland, claimed that NATO has repeatedly urged Denmark to address what he deems a 'Russian threat' from the island, declaring, It's time, and it will be done! The proposed tariffs would apply to Denmark and several European countries, including the UK, France, and Germany, with potential increases to 25% later in the year.
The leaders of the affected nations expressed full solidarity with Denmark and its people, reaffirming their commitment to Arctic security and mutual respect for sovereignty. Frederiksen echoed these sentiments on social media, stating, We are not the ones seeking conflict... Europe will not be blackmailed.
Widespread public demonstrations occurred in Greenland and Denmark against Trump's takeover ambitions, reflecting a strong sentiment among both Greenlandic residents and international observers. Reports indicate that only 6% of Greenlanders supported US control of the territory, while a significant majority opposed it.
As tensions escalate, leaders including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have called Trump's tariff threats completely wrong and plan to engage directly with the US administration. The unfolding situation emphasizes the importance of dialogue based on principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity in navigating international relations.
