Estonia has announced that a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone over its territory, suspected to be a Ukrainian projectile misdirected by Russian electronic jamming. The incident occurred when a Romanian F-16 fired a missile, causing drone debris to fall in a marshy area in central Estonia with no reported damage.

Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur stated that the drone was monitored before entering Estonian airspace, and he was in immediate contact with his Ukrainian counterpart, who extended an apology for the incident. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry attributed the drone's deviation to Russian interference, emphasizing that they did not intend for their drones to stray into Estonian airspace.

The incident escalates the tensions in the region, as both Estonia and Latvia have reported similar occurrences of drones entering their territories. Latvia’s Prime Minister recently resigned amid political turmoil sparked by such incidents. Furthermore, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry accused Russia of deliberately redirecting its drones in an attempt to incite crisis among the Baltic states.

This ongoing situation reflects the heightened military activity in the Baltic region, as NATO countries show increased readiness against potential provocations from Russia. The geopolitical landscape remains tense following Ukraine's intensified drone operations targeting Russian facilities, notably near the borders of the Baltic states.
