Fighters from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have executed a number of unarmed people after seizing the Sudanese city of El-Fasher, new videos analyzed by BBC Verify show. The RSF, engaged in a brutal war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for more than two years, captured a key military base in the city over the weekend.
Videos emerged showing men in military fatigues, some with RSF insignia, committing extreme violence in El-Fasher. The United Nations' Sudan coordinator reported receiving credible accounts of summary executions. The RSF has denied targeting civilians.
Since the conflict's outbreak in 2023, more than 150,000 people have died, with around 12 million displaced. Denise Brown of the UN highlighted a troubling trend of executions against unarmed men as RSF forces advance into El-Fasher.
In one clip, an unarmed man is seen shot while surrounded by deceased individuals in a hallway. Other videos depict the RSF's Abu Lulu participating in executions, raising serious concerns about war crimes under the Geneva Convention.
The RSF's violent actions come amid reports from satellite images indicating mass killings in El-Fasher. Analysts from Yale corroborated these accounts citing clusters in the images resembling human bodies, escalating fears of a humanitarian crisis and potential genocide. This alarming situation warrants international attention as Sudan descends further into chaos.
