MUSCATINE, Iowa — Authorities in Muscatine are investigating a tragic incident that has claimed the lives of six individuals, allegedly shot by a relative who later took his own life after a confrontation with police.

Police were called to a residence about 50 miles southeast of Cedar Rapids, where Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies said four people were found fatally shot. Later, the suspect, 52‑year‑old Ryan Willis McFarland, was located on a trail in the city and took his own life while speaking with officers.

Kies added that two other men, believed to be relatives of McFarland, were also found dead elsewhere in the city—one inside his home and another in a business. The victims’ identities and any background details have not yet been released.

Today I simply do not have the words, Kies said, describing the tragedy as an act of evil that has hurt the community. Authorities are continuing to process crime scenes and conduct interviews, urging anyone with information to contact the department’s major crimes unit.

McFarland had a criminal record, but Police Chief Kies did not disclose further details. The investigation is ongoing as the community grapples with this devastating loss.
