A 19-year-old Mexican man, Royer Perez-Jimenez, has died while being held by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His death occurred at the Glades County Detention Center in Florida, where he was discovered unconscious on March 16th. ICE has indicated that the cause of death is presumed to be suicide, although an official determination is still pending. This tragic incident marks Perez-Jimenez as the youngest reported death in ICE custody since the heightened immigration enforcement began under the current administration.
Authorities noted that Perez-Jimenez had been arrested earlier this year on charges of fraud and resisting an officer after he entered the US illegally. Upon admission to the detention center, he reportedly denied any mental health concerns or thoughts of self-harm. In response to the death, the Mexican government has called for a thorough investigation, declaring the fatalities of detainees as 'unacceptable' and demanding accountability to prevent future incidents. Notably, reports indicate that this incident is part of a larger pattern, with over 42 migrant deaths occurring in ICE custody since the resumption of strict immigration policies in 2025, contrasting sharply with the 24 reported during the previous presidential term.
