Finnish Teen Arrested in Scattered Spider Ransomware Network
In a rapid cross‑border operation, investigators seized 19‑year‑old Peter Stokes in Finland after an Interpol Red Notice led to his extradition to Chicago. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) cited his alleged role in the Scattered Spider hacking group, a coalition accused of siphoning corporate data and demanding up to $8 million in cryptocurrency from a luxury jewellery retailer. The DoJ notes that the group has topped $100 million in ransom payouts to 2024.
Stokes—holding dual U.S. and Estonian passports—faces charges of computer intrusion, conspiracy and fraud. He was ordered to remain in federal custody following his appearance in Chicago court on Tuesday. This arrest follows earlier cooperation between Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, the FBI in both Copenhagen and Chicago, and the U.K.’s National Crime Agency (NCA) in tracking Scattered Spider’s alleged 2024 Transport for London attack which involved the theft of data from over ten million users.
