SANTA FE, N.M. (Deep Roots News) — The first trial specifically addressing child safety issues related to social media, with a focus on Meta’s platforms, is set to begin in New Mexico. State prosecutors allege that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has not only misrepresented the safety of these platforms but has also created a dangerous online environment for children.

In 2023, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez launched a lawsuit against Meta, employing tactics that involved posing as minors on social media to document the explicit solicitations received. The prosecution contends that Meta’s algorithms enticed and addicted young users while acting as a ‘breeding ground’ for predators seeking to exploit children.

The lawsuit asserts that Meta has knowingly exposed children to the threats of sexual exploitation and mental health damage, prioritizing profit over safety. Meta purposely designs its platform to keep young users hooked, facilitating the access of predators to vulnerable children, the complaint states.

Meta's response to these allegations has been one of denial, asserting that the claims are sensationalistic and that their investigation methods are flawed. They insist on their commitment to supporting youth through various safety features designed to protect young users online.

The trial has garnered substantial attention, as it is the first of its kind among numerous lawsuits against social media companies that aim to redefine accountability in the industry. The outcome may set a precedent regarding how tech companies approach safety and design for younger audiences.

As the trial progresses, it will potentially explore sensitive topics related to child safety online. With over 40 state attorneys general pursuing similar claims against Meta, the New Mexico case is closely watched for its implications on future regulations and protections for children on social media.
