SHELBY, N.C. (AP) — A former police officer caught on a doorbell camera repeatedly punching a woman in the face was charged with assault today.

The video, showing Officer Karson Hyder pummeling 34‑year‑old Cherrie Moore on Friday, has spread rapidly on social media.

Hyder, 22, surrendered to authorities Monday morning at the Cleveland County Detention Center and was released on a $10,000 bond. Court documents list no attorney and a phone bound to his name was out of service.

According to the warrant, the officer was responding to a break‑in call when the scuffle started; Moore fled the home on foot and resisted arrest, allegedly grabbing and tearing at Hyder’s uniform.

The separate warrant further alleged that Hyder “unlawfully and willfully” struck Moore in the face, potentially causing a broken nose and busted lip.

The State Bureau of Investigation announced Saturday that it has opened an investigation into Hyder’s conduct.

Moore was initially charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a public officer, but the latter two charges were later dismissed. She was released on an unsecured bond and a phone number linked to her was disconnected.

Moore’s attorney, Ronald Haynes, wrote to the Associated Press that his client “is recovering and receiving treatment for her mental health.” Haynes added, “The heinous actions of former Officer Karson Hyder will forever negatively impact Ms. Cherrie Moore and her family, and it’s a small relief that city officials responded so promptly to terminate and charge Mr. Hyder.”
