In brief
Emergency services respond to floods as thousands remain powerless and at risk in affected regions.
Hundreds of thousands of residents in eastern Australia are enduring power outages in the wake of Cyclone Alfred, which has unleashed fierce storms across the region. Communities in southeastern Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW) began the arduous task of clean-up on Sunday following significant flooding and destruction caused by the storm. The situation escalated tragically when authorities discovered the body of a 61-year-old man who was swept away by floodwaters. Moreover, in a separate incident, 12 soldiers were hospitalized after their convoy crashed while heading to assist with rescue operations in the region. Cyclone Alfred had intensified off the east coast but weakened into a tropical depression by Saturday evening. On Sunday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a stark warning regarding the continued threats posed by dangerous weather patterns, including flash floods and strong winds. "The situation in Queensland and northern New South Wales remains very serious due to flash flooding and heavy winds," he stated, emphasizing the forecast for ongoing heavy rainfall and coastal conditions. As of Sunday evening, emergency responders had undertaken over a dozen rescue operations, primarily focusing on individuals stranded in vehicles or homes by rapidly rising waters. The New South Wales State Emergency Service reported that they received more than 6,000 requests for emergency assistance. With nearly 290,000 residents still without power, energy companies cautioned that the outages could last for several days.In northern New South Wales, significant flooding was particularly evident in towns like Lismore, where erosion has been reported on the Gold Coast. Although Queensland authorities have not confirmed any fatalities or missing individuals thus far, the recovery efforts continue as local authorities and agencies strive to manage the crisis. As citizens and emergency crews navigate the aftermath of this natural disaster, solidarity and support remain crucial for the affected communities enduring the storm's extensive impacts.
