In brief

On June 21, 2025, a devastating accident involving a hot-air balloon in Praia Grande, southern Brazil, has resulted in the tragic loss of at least eight lives. The ill-fated balloon, which was carrying 21 passengers, caught fire mid-air shortly after 8 a.m. local time and subsequently plummeted to the ground in a popular tourist destination known for its breathtaking canyons and hot-air balloon excursions.

According to reports from local authorities, thirteen passengers managed to survive the harrowing fall. Dramatic footage circulating on Brazilian media depicted the balloon engulfed in flames before it descended towards a forested area. State officials highlighted that 27 firefighters, along with an aircraft and multiple vehicles, were dispatched to the scene to search for survivors while police began their investigation into the crash's cause. The pilot, who also survived, informed investigators that a reserve gas cylinder stored in the gondola was responsible for the fire, leading to the crash. In a desperate attempt to save lives, he instructed passengers to jump to safety before the balloon rose back into the air, weighed down by lighter cargo.
