In brief
A total of 241 individuals were impacted by a norovirus outbreak aboard the Queen Mary 2, with the ship implementing strict sanitation measures on its return voyage to Southampton.
More than 230 passengers and crew members aboard the luxury cruise ship Queen Mary 2 are grappling with a norovirus outbreak that has surfaced during its 29-day round-trip journey from England to the Eastern Caribbean. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting affected 224 passengers and 17 crew members out of 2,538 on board. The Queen Mary 2, the flagship ocean liner of Cunard Lines, departed from Southampton, England on March 8, but reports of the outbreak began to arrive after the ship’s stopover in New York City on March 18. Following the onset, the vessel has implemented isolation protocols for those affected and has undertaken thorough sanitization efforts. The cruise included stops in several Caribbean locales, including St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados, Dominica, St. Kitts, and Tortola. Currently, the QM2 is navigating back through the Atlantic and is scheduled to dock in Southampton on April 6. Cunard has communicated that the situation is under control and that the crew's rapid response is contributing to a decline in reported cases. The Queen Mary 2, launched in 2004, measures 1,132 feet and ranks among the largest ocean liners globally. During a previous voyage in 2013, it experienced a significant norovirus outbreak as well, leading to extensive sanitation measures.Norovirus—a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus commonly seen in confined environments like cruise ships—can infect up to 21 million people annually in the United States. Transmission typically occurs via contact or through contaminated food and water. As there is no specific treatment available, individuals typically recover within a few days. The CDC mandates reporting of outbreaks aboard cruise ships, accounting for total cases throughout the entire journey. Recent records show other cruises, such as a Seabourn Encore voyage from Japan and a Holland America cruise from Florida, also experiencing similar norovirus outbreaks in recent months.
