In Val-Cenis, four members of a larger group of seven skiers were swept away by a massive avalanche. Three of the Norwegian skiers perished on the spot, while a fourth, a woman, succumbed in the hospital after suffering from severe hypothermia and cardiac arrest. Jacques Arnoux, the mayor of Val-Cenis, stated that despite each skier carrying an avalanche beacon, they were skiing off the marked trails, which significantly increases the risk involved. “It was an avalanche of great size triggered outside the ski area,” he remarked.
In a separate incident in Haute-Savoie, a 30-year-old Swiss woman died while skiing with her brother, who was later hospitalized for tests, and her father, who escaped unharmed. They had been equipped with anti-avalanche airbags while skiing in the Mont Blanc massif. This incident follows closely on the heels of a similar tragedy where a Brazilian-Portuguese skier was killed in a substantial avalanche in the Mont Blanc area just a day prior.
The fatalities highlight the inherent dangers of off-piste skiing and the importance of safety precautions in these unpredictable environments as mountain rescue teams continue to respond to these incidents.
