Authorities report that the woman fell from her raft shortly after noon on Saturday. Despite being rescued and airlifted to a hospital in severe condition, she sadly succumbed to her injuries later that evening. Local prosecutor Marion Lozac'hmeur has confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, classified as "involuntary manslaughter," is underway, with an autopsy expected to follow. The victim, who has yet to be identified, was navigating a challenging stretch of river colloquially referred to as "the wallet." This section, along with others on the Guisane and nearby Durance rivers, has a history of incidents where conditions can shift rapidly, particularly during spring runoff from melting glaciers. Briançon is known for its popular white-water rafting activities, especially in the early summer months when conditions draw adventure seekers. In 2022, another incident on the Durance river led to the death of a British man in similar circumstances. The Foreign Office has confirmed they are liaising with local authorities.
