In brief

Wilbur‑famed Bollywood nephew Imran Khan is ordered to depart India by the end of October after joining a youth protest in Mumbai calling for reforms in the country’s electoral system. Khan, an American citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India card, was detained briefly during the demonstration but blocked the chief election commissioner’s name. His lawyer seeks to challenge the ban in the Bombay High Court, arguing that OCI cardholders can freely join civic protests. The episode underscores growing unrest across India’s cities as younger voters demand greater accountability from electoral officials.

Actor Imran Khan Forced to Leave India After Joining Youth‑Led Protest

Authorities in India have ordered actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, to leave the country by 28 October after he participated in a protest demanding electoral reforms.

Khan, an American citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, can travel freely to India but cannot vote or stand in elections. The police said he joined a demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

His lawyer plans to challenge the order in the Bombay High Court, arguing that the law provides no restriction for OCI holders to take part in civic protests. The filing describes the notice as "drastic".

Khan’s activism came after a surge of youth movements in India demanding greater transparency in elections. Over the past week, thousands marched in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, and key opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, rallied in New Delhi to push for the chief commissioner’s resignation.

The police detainment of Khan followed the protest, and later he shared a photo from the police van on his Instagram, garnering more than two million likes. The episode highlights the growing tension between youth activists and the state’s electoral authorities, marking a significant moment for citizens who feel their voices are not being heard.
