NEW YORK (AP) — The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off Thursday in New York City, featuring new balloons such as Buzz Lightyear and Pac-Man along with exciting floats representing Labubu and Lego.
The parade is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. EST, rain or shine, along the Upper West Side of Manhattan, concluding at Macy's Herald Square flagship store on 34th Street.
On this chilly day, with temperatures in the 40s and wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph, the weather poses a challenge since city laws restrict the flight of full-size balloons under certain wind conditions. Historically, balloon flight has only been grounded once due to weather, in 1971.
Authorities will assess conditions Thursday morning, and New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the absence of specific credible threats to the event, ensuring that thousands of police officers will be present along the parade route.
The parade has been a focal point for protests in recent years, particularly by pro-Palestinian activists. Officials are prepared to handle any disturbances that may arise based on past experiences.
As for entertainment, a variety of performers, marching bands, dancers, and cheerleaders will take part in the festivities, including stars like Cynthia Erivo and groups associated with popular media like KPop Demon Hunters. The event promises a joyous atmosphere leading up to the arrival of Santa Claus.
The parade will be broadcast live on NBC, hosted by Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and Hoda Kotb. It will also be available for streaming on Peacock.
