MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — In Minnesota, the large Somali community finds itself at the center of a media firestorm following President Trump’s assertion that the administration’s immigration actions are tied to a spate of fraud cases, largely implicating residents with East African roots.

Recently, Trump referred to Minnesota’s Somali residents in derogatory terms, amplifying scrutiny as the Republican party criticizes Governor Tim Walz for his perceived inaction towards the alleged fraud. This has become a significant talking point as the state prepares for the upcoming gubernatorial election.

With the largest population of Somali immigrants in the U.S., Minnesota is home to approximately 84,000 Somalis out of around 260,000 nationwide. The vast majority of this community are American citizens. Reports indicate that nearly 58% were born in the U.S., and the majority of foreign-born individuals are naturalized citizens.

The Scope of the Allegations

The recent fraud investigations, particularly the Feeding Our Future case, have raised alarming concerns, with projections estimating losses could exceed $1 billion. The Feeding Our Future scandal involves allegations that millions were misappropriated from federally funded programs designed to feed children during the pandemic. Initially exposing this fraud in 2022, the case has resulted in charges against numerous individuals, many of whom share a Somali background, with 72 out of 78 defendants linked to the Feeding Our Future case alone.
