In brief

The World Food Programme reports severe food shortages amidst a humanitarian disaster in an area devastated by civil war.

The dire situation in the besieged Sudanese city of el-Fasher has reached alarming levels as the World Food Programme (WFP) strongly warns of potential starvation among its residents. For over a year, vital food supplies have not been able to reach the city, which is now encircled by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), making delivery nearly impossible. El-Fasher, located in Sudan’s troubled Darfur region, is home to approximately 250,000 individuals, all facing a dire shortage of food as local reports indicate rising fatalities linked to starvation. Since civil unrest erupted in April 2023, characterized as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, the WFP has been vocal about the critical food scarcity impacting the populace. According to Eric Perdison, the WFP’s regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa, families are resorting to increasingly desperate measures, with reports emerging of individuals consuming animal feed and food waste. He stated, “Everyone in el-Fasher is facing a daily struggle to survive. People's coping mechanisms have been completely exhausted by over two years of war.” Without immediate intervention, he warned, the consequences would be catastrophic. The ongoing conflict has severely obstructed trade routes and supply lines leading to el-Fasher. Following an ambushed aid convoy in June, which saw blame exchanged between the army and the RSF, the WFP has been advocating for a humanitarian ceasefire to facilitate aid delivery. Despite plans to dispatch food trucks, the lack of secure passage continues to thwart efforts to provide necessary nourishment and assistance. Among those affected is an eight-year-old girl named Sondos, who fled el-Fasher with her family. She recounted the harrowing conditions, stating, “In el-Fasher there was a lot of shelling and hunger. Only hunger and bombs.” As the situation escalates, international attention is urgently needed to address the deepening crisis, which has seen over 150,000 lives claimed since the conflict reignited, further exacerbating an already volatile humanitarian landscape in Sudan.
