In brief
In Nabatieh, southern Lebanon, the once-vibrant market faces destruction from Israeli raids, yet local vendors rally to salvage what's left, embodying resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
In the charming hillside city of Nabatieh, southern Lebanon, the echoes of a once bustling market are overshadowed by the remnants of destruction. Following a series of intense Israeli airstrikes aimed at retaliating against Hezbollah, the heart of this community has been turned into rubble. As residents sift through the debris, they confront not only the loss of their businesses but also the emotional weight of their community’s history. On a chilly morning in December, local shop owners gathered, united by a common purpose: to salvage what they could from their pulverized surroundings. Among them was Raed Mokaled, 58, who stood amidst twisted metal and shattered concrete, his gaze reflecting disbelief. "Everything is gone," he lamented, recalling the moment an "orange ball of fire took out everything," reducing his optical business to ruins alongside his family's gold and watches store.Once a thriving center where vendors and shoppers alike convened, the market now lies desolate. Significant airstrikes followed a brief period of tension, rooted in the escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah, particularly following the October 7, 2023 terror attacks on Israel. Although a temporary truce was established in November, the scars of conflict remain deeply etched in the landscape.Community members reported a profound sense of loss, yet also a flicker of hope. One clothing shop owner struggled to retrieve items buried under mangled rebar, while a nearby photo studio operator sifted through debris in search of dust-covered negatives. “We have to keep moving forward, for ourselves and for our community," Mokaled asserted, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit even amid ruin.As Nabatieh’s residents mourn what was lost, they also embody a determination to rebuild and reclaim their market, illustrating that livelihoods—much like communities—can rise anew from the ashes of destruction. In a world rife with challenges, their story serves as a poignant reminder of resilience in the face of adversity.
