In a striking convergence of empowerment and exploitation, Nicole Daedone, the co-founder of the controversial women’s wellness company OneTaste, was sentenced on Monday to nine years in a federal prison following charges of forced labor. According to federal prosecutors, Daedone's operation manipulated vulnerable individuals, particularly women, into compromising positions under the guise of personal and sexual wellness.

At her sentencing in Brooklyn, she was also ordered to forfeit $12 million—the amount she gained after selling the California-based company. Prosecutors argued that Daedone’s actions inflicted financial, emotional, and psychological damage on numerous victims.

Scores of victims were left not just with debts, but with scars from their experiences, prosecutors wrote in court filings, describing the severe tactics used by Daedone and her co-defendant Rachel Cherwitz to exert control over OneTaste members.

In stark contrast, Daedone's defense team portrayed her as an advocate for women’s empowerment with no prior criminal record, arguing that a lengthy prison term would be unwarranted. More than 200 character references supported her, including praise from notable figures like CNN's Van Jones, who suggested Daedone had dedicated her life to healing and empowerment.

One of the central practices promoted by OneTaste was 'orgasmic meditation,' a method combining sexual pleasure with psychological wellness, which was touted as revolutionary in the wellness community. However, prosecutors described how the company influenced members, some of whom were survivors of sexual trauma, to engage in uncomfortable sexual acts under false pretenses of freedom and enlightenment.

The discussions surrounding Daedone's sentencing have opened a broader debate on the ethical lines within the wellness industry, particularly how empowerment must always respect personal boundaries. Following the initiation of legal scrutiny, OneTaste has since rebranded as the Institute of OM Foundation, asserting that the allegations were misguided. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential for exploitation even in spaces intended for healing and empowerment.
