BOSTON — A significant winter storm has disrupted holiday travel plans across the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, causing over 1,500 flight cancellations and widespread delays. The storm, which began affecting the area before Christmas and continued into the New Year period, dumped nearly three inches of snow in New York City alone.
By Saturday morning, major airports, including Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy, and LaGuardia, were on alert, posting warnings about possible delays and cancellations on social media. Travelers are being cautioned about hazardous conditions from the Great Lakes through the northern mid-Atlantic and into southern New England, which may lead to tree damage and power outages.
In response to the severe weather, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for over half of the state, while acting New Jersey Governor Tahesha Way issued a similar declaration state-wide. This storm will cause dangerous road conditions and impact holiday travel,” Way stated. We are urging travelers to avoid travel during the storm and allow crews to tend to the roads. Drivers should plan their travel accordingly, monitor conditions and road closures, and follow all safety protocols.”
The National Weather Service indicated that the storm was expected to weaken by Saturday morning but urged continued caution for those traveling during this busy holiday season.
