Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the online gaming platform of 'flagrantly ignoring' safety laws and 'deceiving parents' about the potential dangers it poses to children.
In a recent social media post, Paxton labeled Roblox a 'breeding ground for predators', claiming the platform prioritizes 'pixel paedophiles and corporate profit' over the safety of young users.
The lawsuit signifies an escalation in legal challenges aimed at enhancing online safety and combating internet predators, with Roblox being a popular platform boasting tens of millions of daily active users.
Responding to the lawsuit, Roblox expressed disappointment, insisting the claims are based on 'misrepresentations and sensationalized claims'.
Roblox spokesman stated that the company shares the Attorney General's commitment to child safety online and asserts ongoing efforts aim to eliminate harmful actors from their platform and to protect users.
The platform is known for facilitating interactions between players, which has raised alarms about the potential for exposing young users to inappropriate individuals.
Concerns have heightened among parents and guardians, with reports of encountered abusive behavior and exposure to distressing content on Roblox.
Paxton urged Roblox to enhance protective measures for children from 'sick and twisted freaks hiding behind a screen'. He firmly asserted, 'Any corporation that enables child abuse will face the full and unrelenting force of the law.'
This lawsuit places Texas alongside Kentucky and Louisiana, both of which have also initiated legal proceedings against Roblox concerning children's safety.
In previous statements, Roblox Chief Executive Dave Baszucki advised that parents who are uneasy about their children's gameplay should reconsider allowing access to the platform.
To address safety concerns, Roblox has implemented features in recent years, including age verification measures using video selfies, to regulate communications among users. Notably, the company has enforced a policy that blocks users under 13 from sending messages unless parental or guardian consent is provided.
Roblox has faced bans in certain countries like Turkey due to fears regarding child exploitation. Recently, it came under scrutiny in Singapore after reports surfaced of a self-radicalized teenager being groomed online through the game.
