ATLANTA — A series of violent attacks have shaken the Atlanta community, resulting in the deaths of two women and leaving a man in critical condition. The incidents caught the attention of the Department of Homeland Security after one of the victims, Lauren Bullis, was identified as a DHS employee who was killed while walking her dog.
The suspect, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old from the U.K., became a U.S. citizen in 2022 during the Biden administration. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin expressed his concerns over the series of attacks and underscored Abel's criminal history amid ongoing investigations about the violent acts.
The initial attack occurred late Monday night near a restaurant in Decatur, where an unknown woman was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later succumbed to her injuries. This was followed by the critical wounding of a homeless man in Brookhaven, stated as a random act against the unhoused community. Just hours later, Bullis was discovered in Panthersville with gunshot and stab wounds.
Community leaders are urging for thorough investigations to ensure safety as Abel faces charges including two counts of malice murder and aggravated assault. The incident challenges ongoing discussions about citizenship and public safety, reigniting debates on how criminal histories affect immigration policies.
As the community mourns the loss of lives in these tragic events, the families are remembered for their warmth and compassion, with Bullis's family describing her as 'selfless, kind and compassionate.' Efforts are ongoing to provide support for the victims' families and restore peace within the community.
