Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has tragically lost his life following an attack by suspected armed robbers who opened fire on the team bus of Berekum Chelsea while returning from a game.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its profound shock and deep sorrow, offering heartfelt condolences to the 20-year-old's family, teammates, and all associated with the team. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league, they stated.
According to Berekum Chelsea, the incident occurred as the team bus was en route from an away match against Samartex in Samreboi. The attackers, described as masked men armed with guns, ambushed the vehicle by blocking the road, and began shooting as the bus driver attempted to reverse.
The players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes for safety. As of now, the suspects remain at large, with investigations ongoing.
The GFA has urged necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served, stating they are in contact with the relevant authorities and the club to address this grave incident. Moreover, they have announced plans to review and strengthen security protocols for clubs traveling for competitions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Frimpong joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January, and during his time with the team, he scored two goals in 13 appearances. His tragic death has sent shockwaves throughout the Ghanaian football community.
