In Washington, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have come forward with a plan aimed at fully funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as the nation faces a partial government shutdown. In a joint statement, they announced that over the coming days, Republicans in both houses of Congress will work to fulfill President Trump's directive to secure funding for DHS.
Johnson and Thune outlined a two-pronged strategy to tackle the situation. The first route will follow the regular appropriations process, while the second would involve a reconciliation bill, likely needing to be passed independently by Republicans later this year. However, both strategies face significant hurdles, especially from opposition Democrats, and potential dissent within GOP ranks.
“We appreciate and share the President’s determination to once and for all bring an end to the Democrat DHS shutdown,” stated Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, alongside Thune of South Dakota.
The situation has intensified as both chambers were at a standstill last week when the Senate passed a bill excluding funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Border Patrol, setting aside Democratic demands for further limitations on the agencies.
Notably, the recent statement highlights unity between Thune and Johnson, particularly after Johnson previously dismissed a funding plan proposed by Thune. Meanwhile, President Trump has taken to social media suggesting a need for a bill that focuses on immigration portions of DHS, urging Republican legislators to act swiftly and deliver the legislation to his desk by June 1.
“We are going to work as fast, and as focused, as possible to replenish funding for our Border and ICE Agents, and the Radical Left Democrats won’t be able to stop us,” Trump affirmed. As Congress enters a two-week recess, the future of the shutdown remains uncertain as lawmakers head back to their home states, leaving many awaiting the next steps in this critical funding fight.
