Authorities have identified a young hiker who tragically fell approximately 500 feet from Mt Baldy, a well-known and perilous mountain in Southern California. Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, age 19, was found deceased, along with two other hikers whose identities remain undisclosed, during a recovery operation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Casanova went on a hiking trip on December 29 with a friend, who managed to call for help after the fall. This friend had to traverse away from the incident site to a location with cell reception to provide GPS coordinates for rescue services. Fortunately, this companion was unharmed.
Due to adverse weather conditions characterized by high winds, a helicopter recovery was not feasible, leading to a ground retrieval of the bodies the following day. In a statement, Casanova's family expressed their devastation, describing him as an avid sailor and outdoorsman with a passion for adventure.
Mt Baldy, officially known as Mt San Antonio, rises 10,064 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains and has gained notoriety as one of the most dangerous peaks in the United States. Since 2020, over 14 fatalities have been recorded on the mountain, with various rescue missions carried out to assist stranded climbers.
Authorities advise caution as many seasoned and inexperienced hikers alike take on the mountain’s trails, especially the notorious Devil's Backbone trail, which has proven treacherous. Jenny Smith, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, highlighted the need for novice hikers to avoid attempting these daunting climbs, especially in unpredictable winter weather.
Following this tragic incident, officials have temporarily closed mountain trails to ensure safety against further accidents as investigations proceed.
