HUDSONVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A powerful winter storm hit Michigan on Monday, resulting in a catastrophic pileup along Interstate 196 that involved over 100 vehicles.

The collision, which occurred in the morning, was fueled by icy conditions and heavy snow attributed to the Great Lakes. Over 30 semitrailer trucks were involved in the incident, leading the Michigan State Police to close both directions of the interstate near Hudsonville as crews worked to remove the wreckage.

Authorities reported numerous injuries from the crash, but no fatalities have been confirmed as of yet. Stranded motorists were provided assistance, with some being bused to Hudsonville High School where they could call for help.

The winter storm is part of a broader weather pattern affecting multiple states. The National Weather Service has issued alerts for freezing temperatures and potential blizzards spreading from northern Minnesota through to the southeastern states, including Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

In addition to the pileup in Michigan, snowfall extended as far south as the Florida Panhandle, complicating sporting events in regions that typically see milder winters.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s office documented multiple crashes and jack-knifed semis on the Michigan roads. Authorities have stated that significant road closures will persist as cleanup operations are prioritized.
