At least 11 people were killed after a UPS cargo plane crashed during takeoff from Louisville, Kentucky on Tuesday evening, according to state governor Andy Beshear. Tragically, the casualty count could rise, with concerns that at least one child may be among the deceased.

The crash occurred around 17:15 local time as the freight plane exploded shortly after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Witnesses reported that the left engine caught fire and detached from the wing, causing thick plumes of smoke to billow into the air.

Officials reported numerous injuries among survivors, with victims suffering wounds from burns, shrapnel, and smoke inhalation. As emergency crews sift through the wreckage and debris, multiple individuals remain unaccounted for, compounding the tragedy.

The three-member crew of the plane is feared to be among the deceased, as inquiries begin into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Footage from airport surveillance captured the left engine detaching from the wing during takeoff. Though the plane managed to lift off, it subsequently struck several buildings in the local vicinity.

In light of the incident, Beshear declared a state of emergency to expedite resource allocation for victim support and recovery efforts. The airport has since reopened, allowing flights to resume operations.

At least 16 families have reported missing persons, increasing the urgency of emergency response initiatives. A shelter-in-place order was issued initially due to the fear of explosions and air contamination from the burning wreckage. Investigative teams continue to assess the crash site, which has been described as extremely dangerous due to ongoing fire hazards from spilled fuel.

The UPS plane involved in this incident—a McDonnell Douglas MD-11—was originally a passenger aircraft before being adapted for cargo operations. Although plans were already in place for UPS to phase out this model in the coming years, this event has sparked renewed discussions on aviation safety regulations.

As the community reels from this event, UPS expressed deep sorrow and a commitment to support all affected individuals, affirming that it prioritizes safety within its operations.
