The remains of at least 50 infants and six adults have been dumped at a graveyard in Trinidad and Tobago, police say. The country's police service (TTPS) stated that the bodies were found in the town of Cumuto, about 40km from the capital Port of Spain. A preliminary investigation indicates this may be a case of ‘unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.’ It remains unclear whether this incident is connected to the rampant gang violence affecting the nation, which has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In their statement, police noted that five of the six adults found had identification tags, with two showing signs of having undergone post-mortem examinations. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro described the discovery as 'deeply troubling,' emphasizing that any individual or institution violating their duty of care would be held accountable. Since March 2, a state of emergency has been in effect, granting police extended powers of search and arrest amid high crime rates. Although reports have indicated a significant decrease in violent crime since 2024, the situation continues to challenge law enforcement, drawing the attention of international advisories regarding safety and security.
