In a tragic incident in Melbourne, a car mounted a kerb and crashed into pedestrians, resulting in one fatality. A grey Toyota struck two individuals on Langs Road in the Ascot Vale suburb just before 5 PM local time on Saturday.
According to Victoria Police, one pedestrian died at the scene, while the second sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear, and police have arrested a man in connection with the incident who is expected to be interviewed shortly.
Local media reported that the crash occurred outside the Melbourne Showgrounds, an area that had been hosting the two-day Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event, drawing large crowds.
Photos from the scene depict a police cordon surrounding the damaged vehicle. Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy stated that the driver was apprehended by an off-duty officer, aided by the public.
While it hasn’t been determined if the incident was intentional, police are exploring all possibilities, including the influence of drugs or alcohol.
An eyewitness recounted hearing a screech as the car drove aggressively onto the kerb, impacting several people before U-turning and stalling. He claimed to have stopped the driver from fleeing the scene.
Thousands were expected to attend the event, which celebrates various aspects of pop culture and features notable guests like Andy Serkis and Bonnie Wright.
