In a heartbreaking tragedy on Wednesday, over 60 individuals lost their lives in a major vehicle crash on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, according to the Uganda Police Force.
The disaster occurred around 00:15 local time when two buses traveling in opposite directions collided head-on while attempting to overtake a lorry and a car. One of the buses swerved to avoid the oncoming traffic, only to create a chain reaction that resulted in multiple vehicles overturning and colliding.
A total of 63 fatalities have been confirmed, alongside numerous passengers sustaining injuries. The injured have been transported to hospitals in Kiryandongo for treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and have warned motorists about the dangers of reckless overtaking, which continues to be a leading cause of road accidents in Uganda. Police are urging drivers to exercise greater caution on the roads.
