OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — John Beam, the respected football coach at Laney College who gained national recognition through the Netflix series Last Chance U, has died after being shot on campus. Beam, 66, was known for his unwavering mentorship of young athletes, especially those seen as troubled or at-risk, helping to guide them toward success on and off the field.

Police have arrested Cedric Irving Jr., 27, who was identified as the shooter. Authorities confirmed the attack was targeted, indicating a personal connection between him and Beam. The tragic news rattled the Oakland community, sparking a poignant vigil outside the hospital where Beam succumbed to his injuries.

Mayor Barbara Lee described Beam as a giant in the local community, recalling his impactful involvement in shaping the lives of thousands of youths, including her own family members. For over 40 years, he has shaped leaders on and off the field, and our community is shaken alongside his family, Lee stated.

The incident comes just a day after a student was shot at Oakland's Skyline High School, where Beam previously worked. The mayor emphasized the urgency of addressing the rising gun violence affecting schools and communities.

John Beam's legacy includes mentoring young athletes, with at least 20 of his former players advancing to the NFL.
