LOS ANGELES (Deep Roots News) — A wrongful-death trial initiated against the Los Angeles Police Department stemming from the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta is set to commence. This incident occurred while she was shopping for holiday clothes with her mother at a Burlington store in North Hollywood on December 23, 2021.
During a police response to a distress call regarding a man attacking women inside the store using a bike lock, Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. opened fire and struck both the man and Orellana-Peralta, who was hidden in a dressing room.
The lawsuit filed by Orellana-Peralta's parents claims wrongful death, negligence, and emotional distress. It has drawn significant public interest due to the nature of the shooting and resulting fatalities.
On that fateful day, Soledad Peralta, Valentina's mother, relayed the harrowing experience of holding her daughter as she lost consciousness, with the helplessness of witnessing her daughter’s life ebb away. The family's attorney, Nick Rowley, emphasizes that Valentina had her entire future ahead of her, unjustly disrupted by actions of those sworn to protect the community.
The lawsuit points to failures in training and supervision within the LAPD, asserting that the department’s operational culture permitted such outcomes. This incident reflects systemic issues that must be addressed for accountability in law enforcement, Rowley stated.
As the trial begins, the community and advocacy groups will be closely monitoring the proceedings, which may prove to be pivotal in discussions about police accountability and reform. This case follows recent large settlements in similar police misconduct cases, indicating a growing demand for justice and accountability in law enforcement practices.
