In brief

The Lung Wah Hotel, once a bustling retreat for locals and visitors alike, is now a vibrant museum, reconnecting the community with its heritage.

In its glory days during the mid-20th century, the Lung Wah Hotel served as a serene getaway, surrounded by lush gardens and parks in Hong Kong's northern New Territories. Renowned for its traditional architecture and hospitable environment, it attracted both locals and visitors who enjoyed playing mahjong and relaxing under the pavilions. Iconic martial artist Bruce Lee even trained on the hotel’s rooftop, adding to its allure. However, as city life evolved and modern regulations rendered the hotel unable to operate as before, its role diminished alongside the changing landscape of the area. The past vibrancy clashed with new developments as rice fields were transformed into housing and services diminished due to various municipal changes such as the requisition of the parking lot for local law enforcement.Recently, the history of the Lung Wah Hotel has taken on new life through the opening of Hong Kong Radiance, a dynamic museum that reflects the robust transformations the city has undergone. Curated by prominent graphic designer and collector John Wu, the museum places an emphasis on the eclectic heritage that shaped Hong Kong's unique identity, showcasing its journey from a postwar industrial hub to a significant financial nexus connecting Eastern and Western cultures. Through a carefully designed space, the museum captures fragments of everyday life from the past, successfully merging historical preservation with artistic presentation. Each theme resonates with a visual narrative that grants visitors a chance to engage with the bygone eras, ensuring the vibrant essence of Hong Kong is embraced and cherished amidst ongoing changes.
