In a powerful dialogue with the BBC, two-time Grammy award-winner Tems candidly discussed the pervasive issue of disrespect towards women in the music industry. As she reflected on her early career, Tems revealed, "I realized that there's always a cost. There's always a price that you pay. And a lot of those prices I wasn't willing to pay and there weren't a lot of options." Her revelations highlight the struggles faced by female artists within the predominantly male-driven Afropop scene, which has witnessed a surge in global interest yet remains challenged by gender disparities.

Tems noted the notable absence of female representation among the most recognized names in the industry, such as the "Big Three"—Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid. Fellow female artists like Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade have also voiced their concerns over the hurdles that continue to hinder women's progress. Earlier this year, Tems faced criticism after a performance video went viral, leading her to speak out against body shaming. On social media platform X, she stated, "It's just a body, I will add and lose weight… The more you don't like my body the better for me."

Determined to pave the way for future female musicians, Tems initiated The Leading Vibe Initiative—a project designed to empower young women in Africa's music industry. Launched in her hometown of Lagos, the initiative features workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions aimed at honing the talents of emerging vocalists, producers, and songwriters. "I promised myself that if I get to a place where I can do more, I will make this initiative for women like me," she said, aiming to facilitate access to opportunities that may have eluded her own path.

She shared insightful advice for aspiring women in music: "It's important to have an idea of what you want for yourself, what your brand is, what's your boundary." Passion for one’s craft is crucial, as Tems believes that true artists create regardless of fame. Her success has been a testament to her authenticity; she insists on staying true to her artistry even in the face of industry pressures.

With a flourishing career that includes collaborations with music icons like Beyoncé and Rihanna, as well as headlining at major festivals, Tems continues to defy expectations. She will soon support Coldplay during their sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium, further solidifying her status in the music realm.

Additionally, Tems recently became part-owner of the US football club San Diego FC, an unexpected venture that reflects her belief in expanding possibilities. “I don't see myself as just a singer… I’m much more than that,” she concluded, hopeful for a future where boldness leads to new paths for women in all fields. Tems’ journey embodies resilience and serves as an inspiration for women aspiring to break barriers in the music industry.
