In brief

Matilda Campbell found herself in a precarious situation as she became wedged upside down between boulders while attempting to recover her phone in Australia’s Hunter Valley. Despite the lengthy rescue involving heavy machinery, she emerged with only minor injuries, although her phone was beyond recovery.

Earlier this month, a quest for a lost phone rapidly turned into a dramatic rescue for an Australian woman known as Matilda Campbell. While spending time with friends in the picturesque Hunter Valley, located about 150 miles north of Sydney, Campbell's phone slipped and fell between a set of boulders. Determined to retrieve her device, she attempted to maneuver her way in but tragically ended up stuck between the rocks in a perilous upside-down position. After several unsuccessful attempts by her friends to free her, they decided to call for professional help. According to a post from emergency responders, by the time paramedics arrived, Campbell had already been hanging upside down for over an hour. Concerned for her safety, the rescue team had to carefully remove multiple large boulders to create a pathway to reach her. A hardwood frame was constructed for added stability during the operation, and the rescuers employed a Tirfor winch—a powerful lifting apparatus used for such challenging extractions—to lift a boulder weighing over 1,100 pounds. The entire rescue operation took around seven hours, culminating in Campbell being successfully freed with only minor bruises and scratches. Peter Watts, a New South Wales ambulance specialist rescue paramedic, expressed that the situation was both challenging and rewarding, noting, “In my 10 years as a rescue paramedic, I had never encountered a job quite like this.”However, in a bittersweet end to her ordeal, Campbell could not recover the phone that had led to her misadventure. Acknowledging her penchant for accidents, she humorously stated on Facebook, “No more rock exploration for me for a while!” The beautiful Hunter Valley, renowned for its lush vineyards and recreational activities such as wine tours and nature hikes, is often frequented by locals and tourists alike. Following the incident, Campbell expressed gratitude towards her friends for seeking help and the rescue team for ensuring her safety, emphasizing that she likely wouldn’t be here without their assistance.
