President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken a dramatic step to flag Russian airspace as dangerous while Ukraine continues to raid it with drones that have not only plagued airports but also struck energy facilities and retail depots deep within Russian territory.
“The Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous,” he said. “Every airline that flies over Russian airspace, every insurer, everyone who still uses key Russian airports: the Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous.” He added that Ukraine plans to prevent unintended incidents and hopes the war will “return home to Russia.”
In the same evening, Ukraine notified the UN and the International Civil Aviation Organization that the risk to civilian aircraft is real. While Western carriers largely avoid Russian routes, airlines from Turkey, China, and Gulf states still operate flights over the contested skies.
Flight tracking data showed that Russian airports maintained a limited schedule, with some delays but few cancellations. Yet several carriers, including Qatar Airways and FlyDubai, have stated they will monitor the situation closely and adjust routing as needed.
Decades of conflict in eastern Ukraine, including a 2014 missile downing of a passenger plane and the 2014 MH17 tragedy, underline the persistent danger of civil aviation during war. Recent intercepts of drones within Russia have increased flight risk, with the “Kovyor” air defence plan suspending flights upon detection of a drone. Indigenous communities impacted by the conflict face increased vulnerability and environmental risks, as air travel routes often connect remote regions critical to their livelihoods.
