In brief
Rescue teams located the body of a man who fell into a 20-meter-wide sinkhole in Seoul while riding his motorbike. The incident has sparked discussions around the city's infrastructure and safety measures as a surge in sinkhole occurrences raises alarms.
A man who fell into a significant sinkhole in South Korea's capital city, Seoul, has been discovered dead, according to reports from the local fire department. The unfortunate incident took place in the Gangdong district at approximately 6:30 PM local time on Monday when the roadway gave way unexpectedly beneath the motorcyclist. The victim's body was recovered from underground on Tuesday morning around 11:00 AM, approximately 50 meters from the site of his fall. Another individual, a car driver, sustained injuries during the incident. This event quickly gained attention on South Korean social media, drawing widespread empathy and concern.Dashcam footage circulating online vividly captures the moment of the road's collapse, revealing the motorcyclist falling into the chasm while a car in front narrowly escaped the disaster. In addition to the body, rescuers recovered the man's mobile phone and his motorcycle from the hole, which measures about 20 meters wide and deep.Authorities have yet to disclose the identity of the man, reported to be in his 30s. Kim Chang-seop, the head of the Gangdong fire station, indicated that the hole contained around 2,000 tons of mixed soil and water. While the immediate cause of the sinkhole remains unclear, a recent report disclosed that there have been 223 sinkholes recorded in Seoul over the past ten years. The phenomenon of sinkholes often results from geological conditions such as the dissolution of limestone or chalk, leading to gradual depressions that can unexpectedly collapse. However, human activities like excavation work can exacerbate these formations, resulting in dangerous situations for unsuspecting individuals. This incident echoes previous tragedies, including a case earlier this year in Japan where a truck driver vanished after his vehicle succumbed to a sinkhole. Last August, the search for a woman who fell into a pavement sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur was halted after a week-long effort, underscoring the often perilous reality posed by sinkholes in urban landscapes.
