In brief

Three individuals lost their lives after a fire broke out in the elderly ward of Hamburg's Marienkrankenhaus shortly after midnight. The city's fire brigade reported a challenging rescue as flames engulfed a ground floor room, ultimately resulting in three victims trapped at the scene while emergency workers struggled to reach them.

Approximately 220 emergency personnel were mobilized to extinguish the fire and assist approximately 35 injured individuals. Among the injured, two were hospitalized for more serious conditions—one in life-threatening status—while many others were treated on-site for varying degrees of injuries. The patients typically exhibited mobility challenges, as is common in elderly care, complicating the rescue efforts. Fire crews successfully deployed specialized equipment to prevent the fire from extending to other hospital areas and ensured that many patients were evacuated through corridors and windows, despite the hazardous smoke conditions. The cause of the fire remains undetermined as investigations continue.
