In brief
Mark Longo, caretaker of the popular Instagram squirrel Peanut, pleads with New York authorities for the return of the animal following a raid that has sparked public outcry and a petition accumulating over 20,000 signatures.
In a surprising turn of events, Peanut, an internet-famous squirrel with a large Instagram following, has been seized by New York state's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The seizure occurred during a recent raid on the home of his caretaker, Mark Longo, following complaints of potentially unsafe living conditions for the animal. Longo has expressed his deep frustration and sorrow on social media, asserting that those who reported him hold a “special place in hell.”Initially rescued seven years ago as an orphaned baby, Peanut has garnered a massive following of over 500,000 followers on social media, captivating audiences with his playful antics, often displayed in fun skits masterminded by Longo. Following the seizure, Longo reported that a petition to return Peanut has attracted more than 20,000 signatures and is still growing, highlighting the public support surrounding the squirrel.According to the DEC, the action was prompted by multiple reports from the public suggesting unsafe conditions that could pose health risks, including the potential carrying of rabies, in addition to allegations of illegal wildlife ownership. The current condition of Peanut remains unclear, contributing to the ongoing concern among his supporters.During the raid, the DEC also confiscated another animal from Longo’s care, a raccoon named Fred. Longo had previously raised Peanut from infancy, nursing him back to health after he was found with a missing piece of his tail. As the controversy continues, Longo is seeking legal funds to fight the DEC’s decision, as he stresses the bond he shares with Peanut and his commitment to providing a loving home for the animals he cares for.
