In brief
Marc Fogel, an American educator, spent 3.5 years in a Russian prison after being arrested for possessing medical cannabis. His release underscores diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Russia amid the Ukraine crisis.
Marc Fogel’s journey began as a seasoned educator with a rich background, teaching history at the Anglo-American School in Moscow for nearly a decade. His return to Russia in August 2021 to begin what he hoped would be his final teaching year turned into a nightmare when he was arrested for possessing less than an ounce of cannabis, which he had brought for medical purposes to manage chronic back pain.In June 2022, despite the minor nature of his offense, a Russian court sentenced Fogel to 14 years in a high-security prison— a greater punishment than that given to many convicted murderers. His ordeal lasted until he was finally released on February 11, 2025, following efforts from the U.S. government to secure his freedom.Fogel's experience mirrored that of other high-profile American detainees in Russia, such as basketball star Brittney Griner and journalist Evan Gershkovich. Many believe their detentions have become bargaining chips amid escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow, especially following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. For about a year before his imprisonment, Fogel and his colleagues enjoyed diplomatic immunity. However, as U.S.-Russia relations deteriorated, the Russian government revoked these protections, leading to increased scrutiny and ultimately the closure of the Anglo-American School.Eric Rubin, a former U.S. diplomat involved in Fogel's case, characterized the situation as a hostage-taking. He speculated that the Russian authorities were aware of the cannabis vape canisters Fogel carried with him when he arrived at Sheremetyevo Airport. Now at the age of 63 and having endured significant hardship during his imprisonment, Fogel and his wife Jane hope to find peace as they navigate their next chapter after a harrowing experience shaped by international politics.
