In a stunning twist of fate, 23-year-old kayaker Adrián Simancas narrowly escaped being swallowed by a humpback whale while paddling through the Strait of Magellan, near Chile’s Patagonian coastline. The surreal encounter took place as Adrián and his father, Dall, were enjoying their kayaking expedition when suddenly, he felt a powerful force strike from behind, quickly engulfing him.

“I spent a second realizing I was inside the mouth of something, thinking that it might have eaten me,” Adrián recounted. Faced with the unimaginable situation, his mind raced with thoughts of survival, imagining how he might navigate this predicament, much like the story of Pinocchio. Fortunately, the whale quickly expelled him back to safety.

Dall Simancas, positioned not far away in another kayak, recorded the surprising event on video. “When I turned around, I didn’t see Adrián,” Dall shared, explaining how worry overtook him until he spotted his son resurfacing. “I immediately interpreted it as most likely being a whale because of its size,” he added.

As the video revealed, the sheer scale of the humpback whale was staggering. "Watching the footage back, I realized how enormous it was, perhaps if I had seen it in real-time, I would have been even more scared,” Adrián remarked.

According to wildlife expert Roched Jacobson Seba, humpback whales possess narrow throats, roughly the diameter of a household pipe, making it impossible for them to swallow larger objects like kayaks. This incident was likely an accidental gulp while the whale was feeding on smaller fish, highlighting the importance of caution in marine environments where these giant creatures roam.

Adrián reflected that the experience was more than a mere survival story; it granted him a “second chance” to contemplate his life choices thus far. The encounter serves as a significant reminder about the necessity of noise-making devices on smaller vessels in whale habitats, to prevent accidental engagements with these majestic marine giants.

Ultimately, this surreal brush with nature has encouraged Adrián to appreciate life and the extraordinary connections between humans and the ocean, as well as the need for responsible marine awareness and stewardship.
