In brief

Cuba has once again plummeted into darkness as the nation's aging power grid, long warned to be on the brink of failure, collapses under mounting pressure.

Despite previous warnings about the fragility of Cuba's electrical system, the government has faced criticism for neglecting the much-needed infrastructural upgrades. On Friday, the entire island experienced a lengthy blackout, marking the most severe power outage in over 30 years, a situation exacerbated by dependence on obsolete power plants and limited fuel resources. Efforts were made to restore power later that night, but those hopes were dashed as the grid suffered a second complete disconnection the following day. Lazaro Guerra, the electricity director for Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, expressed cautious optimism during a state TV interview, suggesting some progress might be made, but he refrained from guaranteeing full restoration. "We cannot assure you that we will be able to have the system fully connected today," Guerra admitted, mirroring the uncertainty felt by citizens grappling with the repercussions of antiquated infrastructure and a struggling economy. As the country continues to navigate these challenges, many Cubans are left waiting in the dark, with hopes for a brighter future diminishing under the weight of systemic issues that have been long ignored.
