In brief

The evening tremor, measuring 4.4 in magnitude, has left residents fearful and questioning geological activities in the Campi Flegrei area, while officials investigate building stability across the region.

In the early hours of Thursday, a powerful 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Naples, Italy, compelling numerous residents to spend the night outdoors due to fear and damage. The quake occurred at 01:25 local time (00:25 GMT) at a shallow depth of just 3km, rattling the communities between Pozzuoli and Bagnoli. It was felt widely throughout Naples, leading to power outages in several neighborhoods and causing structural damage, including a damaged church bell tower and smashed car windscreens.According to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the tremor was significant, marking the largest quake in the Campi Flegrei region in four decades. While the seismic activity raised concerns, experts indicated that there was no immediate threat of a volcanic eruption from the nearby Campi Flegrei volcanic crater. Following the earthquake, emergency services rescued a woman from the remnants of a partially collapsed building in Bagnoli, and although she suffered minor injuries, the incident highlighted the vulnerability of structures in the quake-affected area. The seismic event not only disrupted life but also drew residents into the streets, many fearing potential aftershocks. Reports from Pozzuoli featured a local resident expressing worry about whether this recent activity indicated a shift in geological patterns distinct from past tremors. Although the mayor of Bacoli reported no structural damage in his area, it was a "difficult night" for many community members. In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remained engaged with the unfolding circumstances, collaborating with local authorities. Schools across the region were temporarily closed to ensure that safety inspections could be conducted to assess building integrity. Alarmingly, local officials noted an increase in “bradyseism,” the slow gradual ground movement, which has reportedly tripled recently from a rise of 1cm to 3cm per month.Francesca Bianco from INGV warned of the implications of this rapid geological change, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and community preparedness. As the residents of Naples grapple with the shock of the recent quake and its implications, the knowledge of living in a volcanic area serves as a potent reminder of nature's power and unpredictability.
