In brief

Super Typhoon Kong-rey is expected to strike Taiwan as a Category 4 hurricane, prompting severe weather warnings and potential disruptions. The storm follows recent disaster in the Philippines, raising concerns over additional human and infrastructural loss.

The oppressive winds of Super Typhoon Kong-rey are set to collide with Taiwan on Thursday, presenting a monumental threat to the island as it girds for one of the fiercest storms recorded this late in the year. Meteorologists predict that Kong-rey will make landfall resembling a Category 4 hurricane, delivering both catastrophic winds and heavy rainfall that could undermine infrastructure.Authorities have preemptively grounded flights and urged boats to seek safety as the storm continues its relentless approach. Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai, during a visit to the Central Weather Administration, highlighted the possibility of severe landslides and road closures in the eastern regions.Taiwan is not alone in its battle against recent typhoons. Kong-rey is currently passing north of the Philippines, which faced the earlier wrath of Tropical Storm Trami. Reports indicate that the combination of these tempestuous storms has claimed at least 139 lives and left 21 individuals unaccounted for. With Taiwan's Central Weather Administration issuing land warnings for the entire island, residents are urged to prepare for potentially devastating impacts. Sustained winds of 39 miles per hour or greater herald imminent dangers, indicating that effective measure and readiness are essential in the hours leading to the storm's landfall.
